True Story: This Singaporean Mom's Love For Her Child Made Her A CEO

It was this Singaporean mum's wanting only the best for her baby that led her to set up Motherswork, a successful retail chain for mothers, babies, and kids.

"There was nothing – no decent maternity clothes, not many choices of strollers or car seats,” says motherswork founder and CEO Sharon Wong, remembering circa-1998 Singapore.

A new mother herself, Sharon began scouring the world for quality items for her baby.

The problem? Suppliers were only willing to ship internationally if she ordered four pieces per style. “What do you do with an extra three nursing tops or car seats?” she muses.

For Sharon, the answer was to start the first motherswork store – focusing on maternity items – to share her finds with fellow mums.

Since then, motherswork has become a one-stop, total shopping experience for mother and baby, with six stores around the island and eight in China.

To this day, motherswork is very much an extension of Sharon as a mother.

“We do not compromise when it comes to our children and their future, so every product we carry must meet at least four of our 11 motherswork values,” she says. These values range from “multistage” and “original – innovative” to “reliable” and “kind to the earth.”

As a part of its Giving Back programme, Motherswork also supports worthy causes and Singaporean brands.
